Of all the natural forces a building must be engineered to withstand, lightning remains one of the least predictable and most underestimated. For most commercial structures, that unpredictability is a design consideration. For a school, it is something more: a daily responsibility to the children, teachers, and families who fill its hallways, fields, and auditoriums.
A school campus is rarely a single building. It is closer to a small town, one where lessons, laboratory experiments, sports practices, performances, and lunchtime gatherings are all happening at once, often outdoors, often in large open assemblies that cannot be evacuated in a hurry. When a storm rolls in, the margin for error is thin, and the cost of getting the design wrong is measured not just in property damage, but in disrupted learning and shaken community trust.
It is this understanding, that safety engineering for schools carries a different weight, that shaped a recent collaboration between ICS Technology Services and one of our long-standing clients in the lightning and grounding industry. Together, we set out to design a lightning protection system for a high school campus in Florida, one of the most lightning-prone regions in the United States, and to do it in a way that met the highest bar for safety, compliance, and reliability.
